We talked a bit in class about this painting. Aaron asked why Watteau would have chosen the subject--a very good question. You might look into the Pierrot figure--and the story of Commedia dell'Arte--and the notion of "type" in general. Another word for this is figura--the source being Erich Auerbach in his classic book, Mimesis...
